Penduka women embroider their story to wake up

WWAKEUP is very proud to announce a collaboration with Penduka which has the same meaning as our brand name: “to wake up”.

Penduka is a social enterprise and training centre for local, less privileged women in Namibia. It brings hope and encourages the women to wake up, take the lead, and gain self-confidence. A unique handmade item for you is an income for the women of Penduka. Not only that, but by buying products you also contribute towards financing Penduka's education and health projects.

Working with Penduka feels like something inevitable, not an option. It is because it has a very similar philosophy of WWAKEUP, which supports Fair Trade principles, and seeks partnerships with local businesses and artists to build strong relationships.

Penduka allows the design of the product to embody the producer's daily stories or messages they wish to convey. Therefore, women in Penduka express Namibia's daily life as a motif. When they create color combinations or designs, they often get a lot of inspiration from Namibia's nature, trees, grass, and wild animals. Each motif contains African women's traditional technology, their daily lives and beliefs, so each product comes as if it were a living fairy tale. 

Our first project started with the Foundation Penduka in the Netherlands and their ongoing partnership team in Seoul, Korea to exchanges knowledge and skills. This is because we can improve the quality of the product by sharing unique design support and inspiration. 

For our next interaction, in collaboration with Penduka, WWAKEUP will give the women of Penduka total creative freedom and access to its workshop and fabrics, inviting them to express their artistic vision of cats in Namibia.
